What to Eat at Hariharalaya
The daily menu consists of local vegan cuisine that’s fresh and prepared daily. You receive a recipe PDF at the end of your trip so you can recreate all the dishes at home! A few of the meals we enjoyed include:
- Coconut Cream Shake
- Scrambled Tofu
- Khmer Sweet and Sour Stir Fry
- Indian Dhal
- Mexican Bean Chilli
- Coconut Cream Béchamel with Spinach and Mushrooms
- Raw Cashew Cream Pie
- Fresh coconuts every day
Massages You Should Book
I regularly book a massage therapist in the city of Toronto and I can say that the three massages I had at Hariharalaya offered something different. I left the room feeling blissed out and almost disoriented, I suppose I’m not used to feeling that relaxed. Book Hariharalaya’s Relax and Rejuvenate Package to enjoy all of the following massages for $45 USD.
A Typical Day at the Retreat
The typical day at the retreat started at 6:30 am with the sound of a gong undulating across the grounds. The mornings were spent in silence as we congregated in the Yoga Hall. The mats were already neatly lined up awaiting our arrival.
7:00 am |Morning Yoga Practice
We started at dawn with an hour of asana practice led by a trained teacher. The yoga was accessible to all levels and focused primarily on establishing a foundation of knowledge and physical awareness.
8:30 am |Silent Sitting Meditation
We engaged in either a breathing practice or chanting exercise before our silent sit. Our group built up our meditation practice throughout the week by extending the duration and accruing new techniques. We arranged a cushion, bench, or chair and sat together in collective stillness.
9:00 am |Breakfast Circle
Immediately following the morning practice our group gathered in the kitchen to surround a table of fresh, local vegan food. We said our thanks and lifted the silence to enjoy our meals together.
10:00 |Free Time/Activity
The retreat schedule allowed for a lot of flexibility. You could spend your free time on a number of activities:
- Mandala workshop
- Dharma talks
- Temple Pilgrimage
- Bike ride
- Lounge in hammock
- And more
1:00 pm |Lunch Circle
After the group spent time independently, we would gather again in the afternoon for another mouth-watering cuisine. The food was all local from the village and from varying cuisine, from traditional Khmer curries to Western-style “Sloppy Joels.”
2:00 pm |Free Time/Activity
I kept my schedule packed with activities or massages. Some people opted for a hammock with a book they plucked from the in-house library. Whether you choose to join a cooking workshop or eat cake in the pool, it’s completely up to you.
6:00 pm |Evening Practice
The evening practice is beautiful. The sunset breaks through the open air yoga hall showering the group with a glow as we close the day in asana and seated silence.
7:00 pm |Dinner Circle
We take the buzzing energy of the practice into the dining hall and listen to Joel or another staff member read off a stimulating poem. After our collective “Om” we line up to indulge in another fresh plant-based meal.
8:00 pm |Evening Activity
Every evening there was a different activity planned that usually encouraged the group to bond. One night you might be cozying up for a documentary and another you could be wildly dancing around a fire. I went to every evening activity and they were usually the highlight of my day.
10:00 pm |Silence and Sleep
Flickering torches illuminate the grounds as the moon hangs in the sky. Silence resumes and after a full day, people disperse to their designated huts and gardens to sleep like rocks.
